Sub-Regions of Bay Area

North Bay is also notably the least urbanized section of the Bay Area, with several areas of undeveloped open space, farmland, and seemingly endless vineyards. The largest city in North Bay is Santa Rosa, located in Sonoma County and home to a population of nearly half a million residents. This makes Santa Rosa the fifth largest city in all of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The most well known of all the Bay Area includes none other than the City and County of San Francisco. The city is separated by water from the north, west and east, as well as by a county line from its neighbor cities to the South. San Francisco is known as the premier cultural, financial, and urban center of the region, as well as a highly reputable "weekend destination" city.
The Peninsula refers to the section of the Bay Area that lies between the City and County of San Francisco and the South Bay. Officially named the San Francisco Peninsula, the area consists of several small cities and suburban communities in San Mateo County and the northwestern part of Santa Clara County. It also is comprised of many towns along the Pacific coast, including Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. The Peninsula is a very diverse area, and has experienced a large growth rate of both middle and upper class families who have settled here as a result of the technology boom of the 1980s in nearby Silicon Valley.
The East Bay sub-region consists of Alameda and Contra Costa counties. It is further split into two regions, the inner East Bay and the outer East Bay. The inner East Bay sits along the Bay coastline, while the outer East Bay consists primarily of inland valleys separated from the inner East Bay by hills and mountains.
South Bay is comprised of the communities along the southern edge of the Bay, and includes the major city of San Jose and its outlying neighbors.
